Explorer in the slip-on shoes①

Hi everyone, it's Yuri! How is your January going? Busy? Relaxing?

I just took a break for a week and went back to my hometown, Hokkaido. Had an awesome time and I'm pretty sure I gained a few pounds :P

Today I will introduce you a bit more about the nature surrounding Tsutsujiso. Yes we have the famous yurts, yes we have all the museums and artworks nearby, but there is more! Let's begin :)

It was the first morning of 2017 - January 1st. I came to work a bit earlier to see the first sunrise of the year. The air was chilling but not too intimidating. As I entered the main gate, I saw one of the night guards, Mr. T. He was raking pine needles covering all over the ground with a huge besom.

We greeted each other, wishing 2017 will be a great year. After that he said "The tide is ebbing a lot. I mean, A LOT."

It was intriguing and I decided to take a walk along the beach, and then...

Wait...was the water THAT far?

Just as Mr. T said, the tide was ebbing a lot more than usual. It was something I've never seen before. I told him so and he admitted that it's quite rare to see the beach like this.

Are you wondering how the water usually looks like? Here you go:

...Okay it didn't really help as much as I expected. Basically, the slope I was standing on when I took the second picture is usually totally submerged (just like in the third picture. If you take a closer look at the bottom of the concrete that is in contact with water, you can see a tip of the slope a bit). You're always super welcome to come and see yourself!

I was amazed a little too much and took for a while to realize that Mr. T was cheerfully marching toward the area over the yurts, which normally is completely under water. I looked down and checked my shoes. A pair of slip-on sneakers with flat rubber soles - no, not the best shoes for a possibly (very) slippery adventure. I thought, "but if I miss this opportunity, I might not be able to have another one in the future." Besides I needed to start my shift for a day in 45 minutes. I didn't want to waste my time wondering what I would find if I go, when I could actually go and see what it's like. So I followed Mr. T.

And I'm proud of my decision.

A tiny grassland under the sea...? That's the first thing I thought. Rocks were covered with a bright green something that's not like ordinary algae.

"It's sea lettuce," said Mr. T. I've never imagined that fluffy thing in miso soup grows like this. It was vividly green, succulent, and it was just everywhere on the rocks that are usually under water.

What else would I see over the rocks? I sure had high hopes to see something even more exciting once I get there.

BUT THE SEA LETTUCE WAS SO DAMN SLIPPERY!!

"Wait Mr. T, wait for me will ya...!?" I was miserably calling him but he was fast. Mr. T, wearing a super-warm jumper and a pair of cool sneakers (definitely unlike my slip-on shoes), got tiny and tiny...and now over the rocks.

I eventually joined him after a while without slipping (miraculously). Can you guess what I found there? I actually learned a lot of new things as well. But for today I'll just say, it was a great way to start a new year. Look out for my next post! Adios ;)
